The seventh public lecture of the series “Belarusian Music in the World Art Space” was dedicated to Christmas and Christmas Eve.

Christmas rites have survived to the present day, and almost every Belarusian has an idea about the tradition of its celebration.

Since ancient times, when our ancestors marked winter solstice, Christmas has been among the most important holidays in Belarus. Christmas celebrations are associated with the birth of the sun that gives life to all beings on earth. This is the beginning of a new solar year, two weeks of joy and humor, when people share greetings.

The ethnomusicologist, Ph.D. N.I. Danilovich gave a lecture on Christmas traditions in West Polesie.

Polesie is one of the archaic areas where Christmas songs have been preserved from ancient times. The lecturer spoke about the differences and features of the Christmas tunes, their prevalence in the relevant areas, a variety of themes and forms. The attendees listened to Christmas carols and hymns in authentic performance and watched TV movies about Christmas celebrations in the villages of Belarus.

Next lecture will be on December 18, at 19.00.
