On December 15 and 16, classes on Forms and Materials of the Book were conducted at the Book Professors’ Club.
The children became acquainted with the basic forms of the book, as well as with the materials previously used for writing. The “Book Professors" mastered the basic terms: manuscript, papyrus, parchment, scroll, code, script, protograph, and others.
For the young attendees, it was important to understand that, in ancient times, the book was not at all like the modern one. For example, Chinese books were created on bamboo planks interconnected by a rope. One wooden plate was considered a book page. It sometimes took up to several thousand bamboo plates to create a book-scroll. Bamboo books are one of the most important milestones of Chinese writing and culture in general.
In order to consolidate the theory, the museum visitors together with their parents completed a creative task on making “bamboo books”.
All materials are provided by the Bibliology Research Department.
