October 30 marks the 150th birth anniversary of the French writer and philosopher Paul Valéry (1871−1945). He is known not only for his poetry and prose, but also for his many essays and aphorisms on art, history, literature and music. Paul Valéry was a nominee multiple times for the Nobel Prize for Literature.
The Book Museum's anniversary exhibition "5+5+5" showcases a rare art edition by Paul Valéry, Paraboles: pour accompagner douze aquarelles de L. Albert-Lasard / Paul Valéry. [Paris]: Les Éditions du Raisin, [1935].
The art book in the form of an album was published in Paris (1935) with a circulation of 300 copies. It consists of separate sheets nested in a cardboard folder. Copy No. 43 from the collections of the National Library of Belarus, made on special paper from the Vidalon factory.
The illustrations are by Lou Albert-Lazard (1885−1969), an expressionist painter. The 12 watercolours in the art book are recreated on thin transparent paper using photomechanical techniques (heliotype). The title page contains the artist's autograph.
