On 30 May the Republican Scientific and Technical Library hosted the roundtable “The representation of national documents in Belarusian libraries’ e-catalogs: the current state, problems and solutions”.
The meeting was prepared by the cataloging and bibliography committees of the Belarusian Library Association (BLA) with the purpose of exchanging experience in the representation of national documents in e-catalogs and databases of the biggest libraries and information institutions of Belarus, and also discussing complex cases in the identification of national documents.
The roundtable was attended by 70 representatives of the biggest Belarusian libraries: the National Library of Belarus (NLB), the Republican Scientific and Technical Library (RNTB), the Central Scientific Library named after J. Kolas of the National Academy of Science of Belarus, the Presidential Library of the Republic of Belarus, the Belarusian Agricultural Library named after I. Lupinovich of the National Academy of Science of Belarus (BelSHB), the Republican Scientific Medical Library, the Minsk Regional Library named after A. Pushkin, the Gomel Regional Universal Library named after V. Lenin, the Central City Library named after J. Kupala, and also the libraries of the Belarusian State University, the Belarusian National Technical University, the Belarusian State Economic University (BSEU), the Belarusian State Pedagogical University named after M. Tank, the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics, the Minsk State Linguistic University, the Belarusian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education, the Belarusian State University of Physical Culture, the Belarusian State University of Culture and Arts, and the Belarusian State Agricultural Academy.
The RNTB director R. Sukhorukova addressed a speech of welcome to the event participants.
The roundtable moderators were the chair of the cataloging committee L. Bushilo and the chair of the bibliography committee N. Nesteryonok.
The deputy director of the National Library of Belarus Т. Kuzminich presented a report on the national document as a subject of representation in library search systems.
The head of department of the National Library of Belarus I. Gryadovkina made a report on the development of content and the maintenance of maintaining a union electronic information resource.
The participants showed a keen interest in the questions of the Belarusian national document identification.
The topic was discussed by L. Bushilo, the NLB head of department, N. Zelenevskaya, the NLB head of department, S. Pugacheva, the NLB head of department, I. Gurinovich, the chief librarian of the BSEU library, S. Voronovich, the BelSHB head of department, and N. Nesteryonok , the RNTB head of department.
The event participant also considered the complex cases of the national document identification, incl. application of the 615 Belmarc-format field in bibliographic records, as well as the presentation of a manual on the development and use of bibliographic electronic resources, issued in 2016.
As a result of the roundtable:
- libraries using the Belmarc-format for submission of bibliographic records in electronic catalogs and databases should apply field 615 in the national document cataloging;
- libraries using other formats for submitting bibliographic records in electronic catalogs and databases should use field 610 (unqualified thematic terms) in the national document cataloging;
- complex cases of the national document identification are to be submitted for discussion and decision-making to the National Library of Belarus and the BLA cataloging and bibliographic committees.
