On 25 May the library hosted the international science and practical conference “The language as a factor of the preservation of national identity: the Belarusian and Ukrainian background”.
The event organizers are the Embassy of Ukraine to the Republic of Belarus in cooperation with the Centre for the Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the Belarusian State University and the National Library of Belarus.
At the opening ceremony the welcome speeches were made by Igor Kizim, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of are the Embassy of Ukraine to the Republic of Belarus, and Roman Motulsky, the director of the National Library of Belarus.
The plenary session was attended by Elena Anisim, the deputy of the Chamber of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus of the 6th convocation; Oleg Trusov, the chairman of the Belarusian Language Society named after Francysk Skaryna; Igor Rynkevich, the coordinator of the Working group of the National Platform of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum, and also heads of research and cultural institutions, representatives of scientific community and mass media of Belarus and Ukraine.
The attendees discussed the questions of the preservation of the national language as an element of self-identification and component of national security of the state. Special attention was paid to the historical aspect: the origins of the Belarusian and Ukrainian languages, the language state in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania etc. Also reports on the questions of the current state of national literature and bookselling in the both countries were presented.
