From May 28 to June 10, a thematic exhibition entitled “WIPO and the International Intellectual Property Protection” runs in the documents of international organizations reading room (207g).
Intellectual property (IP) is a set of personal and property rights of the author, their heirs or other individuals and legal entities under the law or contract. Intellectual property is considered as a product of an individual’s intellect. IC is divided into two categories: Industrial Property and Copyright, as well as related laws.
IP include inventions, literary and artistic works, symbols, names and images used for commercial purposes. Legal systems protect intellectual property through patents, copyright, trademarks, which allow people to seek recognition or receive financial rewards for their inventions or works. By balancing the interests of inventors and the general public, the IP system helps create favorable conditions for creativity and innovation.
Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property (1883) and Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works (1886) were the first conventions to deal with the intellectual property. The World Intellectual Property Organization https://www.wipo.int/portal/en/ (WIPO) administer these agreement.
WIPO is a specialized agency of the United Nations that deals with policy issues, cooperation, as well as services and information in the field of intellectual property. Currently, 192 states are members of the Organization. WIPO headquarters are located in Geneva (Switzerland). The CEO is Francis Gurry.
The Republic of Belarus has an effective IP protection system. Our country is a party to many multilateral international treaties operating under the auspices of WIPO, as well as a number of multilateral international agreements, concluded within the CIS in the field of the protection of industrial property, copyright and related rights.
Since November 2010, the National Library of Belarus is the depository of WIPO documents. The offered thematic exhibition will acquaint readers with the activities of the organization and its documents concerning international intellectual property law (conventions, contracts, and agreements), publications on copyright, patents and trademarks, annual reports and brief reviews of WIPO.
The exhibition includes the following thematic sections:
- Intellectual property: the role and place in the development of modern society;
- WIPO and the international protection of intellectual property;
- Industrial property and patent law;
- Copyright and related rights;
- Intellectual property and innovation development;
- Intellectual property protection in the Republic of Belarus.
The exhibition presents more than 100 books, brochures and periodicals in the Russian and English languages.
The exhibition is designed for university students, graduates, teachers of law and economics departments, heads of enterprises, employees of research and applied institutes, legal advisers and all those interested in intellectual property issues.
The opening hours of the exhibition correspond to the library’s opening hours.
Admission is by library card or by ticket of the library's social and cultural center. Information and tickets may be obtained at the registration desk.
