From 1 November to 31 December, at the Legal information reading room (room 207b) runs a subject book exhibition “We choose the Life” timed to World AIDS Day.


The World AIDS Day is observed annually on 1 December. It was first proclaimed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1988 to become a reminder of the necessity to stop the global epidemics of HIV/AIDS.

For more than 30 years, the HIV infection has been the urgent issue for the world community. AIDS remains a complex incurable illness that heavily affects not only individuals but also communities and countries. It is estimated that since the beginning of the HIV epidemics 60 million people have been infected and 25 millions of them have died.

In the Republic of Belarus 0,09 % of the population have HIV/AIDS. On 1 October, 2011, 12 648 cases of HIV infection have been officially registered.

The analysis of situation in the sphere of HIV/AIDS has determined a number of problems claiming solution within the framework of a state program. The Republic of Belarus has adopted the State program on the prevention of HIV infection for 2011–2015.

The State program on the prevention of HIV infection for 2011–2015 is developed in conformity with legal standard acts regulating medical care and antiepidemic and preventive measures against HIV infection, and is aimed at the further HIV control and reduction of mortality rate among AIDS patients.

The basic measures of the program are: treatment care and diagnostics, social and psychological aid, prevention, and also the improvement of material and technical basis of public health service.

The major tasks of the program are: creation of favorable conditions for public access to HIV prevention services, provision of permanent and equal access to treatment, care and support to HIV-positive people, prevention of HIV infection amongst vulnerable groups, and also the improvement of nation system of monitoring and evaluation of HIV/AIDS situation and the enforcement of human resources in the sphere of HIV prevention.

HIV/AIDS pandemic remains an urgent issue of modern society, taking away the health and life of young employable people all over the world. That is why the development of complex measures against the epidemic is the major task of all nations on the Globe.

The exposition includes the following subject sections:

  • HIV infection problems in the system of national law;
  • Belarusian public policy for HIV/AIDS prevention;
  • AIDS and human rights.

More than 40 documents are on display: books, brochures, periodicals.

The exhibition is recommended to the broad spectrum of readers who are interested in the issues of HIV/AIDS.
