From June 25, 2009 to August 14, 2009, in the National Library of Belarus (the third floor, circular passage) is open an exhibition “Unsubdued Belarus” prepared in cooperation with National Archive of the Republic of Belarus.
The book-documentary exhibition is timed to the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from Nazi occupants.
The current exhibition is the sign of respect for heroes perished in the Great Patriotic War and veterans: front-line soldiers, partisans, members of underground organizations and those who served on the home front. Its object is to commemorate each of the heroes of the War, awake the historical memory of Belarusian people, remind how dear the Victory cost, and show the contemporaries the heroism and self-sacrifice of our ancestors.
There is a large amount of scientific papers, articles and books dedicated to the Great Patriotic War. However, the theme of the people’s great deed in the most tremendous war in the history of human civilization is boundless and inexhaustible. Each new book dedicated to the Great Patriotic War is one more “flower” in the wreath of people’s memory and gratitude.
At the exposition are displayed publications from the collections of National Library of Belarus. There are the modern documents and scientific papers on the Red Army and partisans’ operations; causes of defeat at the War initial stage; occupation regime’s activities; underground and partisan movement; an outstanding contribution of Belarusian people to the crushing defeat of the Nazi Germany and patriotism of the Belarus who struggled against the occupants during three years.
A particular section of the exposition is dedicated to Belarusian writer participants of the War. There are displayed photos, books, memoirs of participants of the “Bagration” offensive battle, as well as materials on the holocaust in Belarus. Besides that, visitors can see photo albums, reference books and booklets dedicated to the Great Patriotic War memorials.
National Archive of the Republic of Belarus presents materials of partisan and underground press of 1942–1944. The Archive’s collection totals 177 titles of newspapers of Belarusian underground regional committees and district committee, and partisan units. In 1942 when the struggle against Nazi occupants reached its peak, only nine underground newspapers were published. Five of them are displayed at the exposition. There are as well reports of partisan brigades and troops on operations and common people’s life in the enemy’s rear. Drawings by participants of the Great Patriotic War reflecting their vivid impressions are the most interesting materials of the exhibition.
