From 17 January to 10 February, a thematic exhibition “Treasures of the Museum” timed to the 75th anniversary from the date of foundation of the National Art Museum of Belarus runs in the Visual materials reading room (room 307).
The National Art Museum was founded and opened in 1939 in Minsk as the State Picture Gallery. Its collection included at that time works gathered after the civil war in the first museums of Minsk, Vitebsk and Mogilev. During the Great Patriotic War the most part of exhibits were plundered and destroyed.
The post-war revival of the gallery is connected with a long-term activity of its second director E.V. Aladova who devoted all her efforts to renovation of the collection. In 1957 the picture gallery moved into a new building and received the status of the BSSR State Art Museum.
Today the National Art Museum (the modern name since 1993) is well-known not only in Belarus but also abroad. In its exposition, branches and depositories there are kept numerous works of art which make two main museum collections: the national art and monuments of art of different countries and nations.
Along with the permanent exposition the museum offers to visitors various exhibition projects among which a significant place is given to international expositions.
The offered exposition includes reproductions, albums and postcards with the best works of art from the museum collections.
Various editions, books and articles about the history of the museum and its creators N.P. Mikholap, E.V. Aladova, Y.A. Karachun, and also about the activities of its actual director V.I. Prokoptsov are also on display.
The exposition includes over 60 documents.
