From November 9th, 2009, to November 30th, 209, in documents of international organizations reading room (room 207g) is open a book exhibition “Tolerance. Respectfulness. Dialogue” timed to the International Day for Tolerance.
This day was proclaimed by the United Nations General assembly in 1996 (resolution 51/95on December 12th) and is observed annually on November 16th.
The decision on the proclamation was adopted on the initiative of the 28th General Conference of the UNESCO at which the Declaration on the Principles of Tolerance was approved.
The tolerance reveals as “respect, acceptance and correct understanding of rich variety of cultures of our world, our forms of self-expression and ways of displays of human individuality”. The declaration proclaims “a recognition of that people by the nature differ on appearance, position, speech, behavior and values and possess the right to live in the world and to keep the individuality”.
The tolerance forms a basis for mutual understanding and respect. Such approach to life allows to blossom to rich variety of world cultures. It is as well a corner component of efforts of many states and peoples, directed on respect, dialogue and interaction between various cultures, civilizations and peoples.
Education of tolerance gets special importance in the present epoch of an impetuous globalization, mobility and interdependence. In conditions of a rough economic competition in the world, migration of population and reductions of distances, the question of coexistence of carriers of various cultures and beliefs becomes especially actual. The variety is an invaluable advantage, but it can become a source of tension. The tolerance is capable to help settle potential conflicts. It can promote eradication of displays of the racial or cultural superiority and help societies to overcome gradually the rooted prejudices and negative stereotypes. The tolerance makes possible achievement of piece in the world and conducts from the culture of war to the culture of peace.
The exposition includes the following subject sections:
- Dialogue between civilizations: tolerance at the settlement of political and social conflicts;
- The culture of peace;
- Tolerance as the integral element of human rights;
- Education in the spirit of tolerance;
- Dialogue between cultures.
At the exhibition are presented more than 50 documents of international organizations (the United Nations, UNESCO, the European Union, etc.) in Russian, English and German languages: books, periodicals, mimeographed materials of the United Nations (masthead), brochures, and booklets.
The exhibition will be interesting to the broad audience of readers who are interested in cultural diversity, urgent issues of relations between different faiths, questions of tolerance in spiritual, social, cultural and religious spheres.
