From December 12th to January 7th, an anniversary book exhibition “Through the eyes and heart of a child” devoted to the 90th anniversary of Belarusian writer Elena Vasilevich runs in the Belarusian literature reading room (room 205).


Elena Vasilevich's books, which have brought up more than one generation of Belarusians, are interesting and various. In Belarusian national fiction the writer has a particular niche having her own author's voice and a very individual – unique and special image.

Her considerable creative heritage presented at the exposition shows that in the person of Elena Vasilevich Belarusian literature has the fine master of prose, the artist-analyst, the psychologist, the writer possessing a rich creative imagination, a poetic vision of the world, a thin sensation of a word, the author whose books enrich literature for adults, children and youth.

Elena Vasilevich is known to reader audience as the author of series of stories Расці, Ганька / Grow Up< Ganka (1966), Доля знойдзе цябе / The Fate Shall Find You (1968), Новы свет / The New World (1970), Пачакай, затрымайся... / Wait, Keep Off (1970) that make a tetralogy Пачакай, затрымайся... / Wait, Keep Off (1972). The cycle of stories can be named the lyrical biography of the writer and the biography of the whole generation to which she belongs. The tetralogy is one of the best autobiographical works in Belarusian literature and for many readers it became the favorite book of the childhood. The tetralogy is on display in a separate exhibition section.

Interesting are a story Шляхі-дарогі / The Roads (1950), books of collected stories Блізкія знаёмыя / Close Friends (1954), Заўтра ў школу / Tomorrow We Are Going To School (1956), Сябры / Friends (1958), Апавяданні / Short Stories (1959), Падслухала сэрца / The Heart Has Overheard (1960), Калінавая рукавічка / The Guelder-Rose Mitten (1963), Я з вамі / I’m With You (1964), Пісар страявой часці / The Clerk Of Combatant Forces (1969), Адно імгненне / One Instant (1975), Шурка Рэмзікаў / Shurka Remzokov (1985), a collection of stories Мыс Добрай Надзеі / The Cape Of Good Hope (1977), books Люблю, хвалююся – жыву / I Love, I Worry, I Live (1986), Элегія / Elegy (1988), Першая жонка нябожчыка / The First Wife Of The Dead (2002), Горкі ліпавы мёд / Bitter White Honey (2011). All these books are on display.

The writer’s works are translated into various languages – Russian, Bulgarian, English, French, Polish, Ukrainian etc – to become part of Slavic and world literature. They are presented in a particular section of the exposition.

Elena Vasilevich is also a talented translator. The exhibition presents her translations into the Belarusian language of Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe, Password Hope by Z. Voskresenskaya, My Green Cradle by G. Bashitov and many others.

Students of the Belarusian State Academy of Music visited the National library

On April 18, the students of the Belarusian State Academy of Music visited the National Library of Belarus as part of the environmental education and upbringing program. They got acquainted with the thematic book exhibition "Water is a wonderful gift of Nature" dedicated to World Water Day. The exposition is presented in the documents of international organizations reading room (room 207 g).
