From October 11, 2011, to January 11, 2012, at the National Library of Belarus (3rd floor, circular hall) runs an exhibition of the book collection of known researcher of Stanislaw Lem’s life and career Victor Yaznevich timed to the 90th birthday of the writer.

Stanislaw Lem is the world phenomenon in literature of the 20th century. A brilliant and original Polish fantast, dramatist, literary critic and philosopher apt to accurate mathematic thinking, he often applied philosophical grotesque, satire and parody to his work. Lem’s works are of great scope: ranging from classical science fiction to reviews of unwritten books, they abound in intellectual humor, play on words and every possible allusion.

Victor Yaznevich’s collection actually comprises more than 700 books with the works of Stanislaw Lem and works dedicated to the writer’s life and creative activity in 27 languages from 35 countries, as well as articles, interviews, photocopies of letters, photos of Stanislaw Lem and other materials.

The exhibition “The worlds of Stanislaw Lem” presents near complete collection of the researcher: over 600 editions in 27 languages. Many Belarusian readers will see for the first time the postmortem Collected Works by S. Lem (2007–2010, Warsaw) in Polish. The cover design of each volume features one of Lem’s drawings which recurs in “pure form” in the last pages of the book.

The exposition offers a unique opportunity to compare the designs of Stanislaw Lem’s books edited in different countries and see how Lem’s works are appreciated by different peoples: Germans and Spaniards, Greeks and Italians, Norwegians and the French etc, and also appreciate foreign book culture.
