A subject book exhibition “The united world against AIDS” timed to the World AIDS Day runs from December 1 to January 4 at reading room 207g.
The World Health Organization (WHO) proclaimed December 1, 1988 the World AIDS Day after a call for social tolerance and exchange of information on HIV/AIDS that had been issued at the meeting of public health ministers of the world. The United Nations General Assembly accenting the importance of this event urged to observe this Day annually on December 1 (resolution 43/15).
The purpose of the World AIDS Day is to inform the world community on HIV/AIDS and to show international solidarity in the face of pandemic. On this day public and private partners can provide data on the status of pandemic, contribute to HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention, and to assist care for AIDS patients world over.
For last 30 years, the world community has been concerned about the issue of HIV epidemic. In spite of all efforts, the epidemic has not been overcome yet. Considering the growing issue of HIV/AIDS pandemics, in 1996 the United Nations founded the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). UNAIDS supports long-terms global projects for HIV/AIDS prevention, assists in struggle for human rights regardless HIV-status, carries out educational programs for HIV/AIDS prevention and maintains national programs of fight against HIV/AIDS epidemic world over.
From 2005 to 2010, the motto of each World AIDS Day is “Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise”. The basic purpose of the World campaign against AIDS for 2005-2010 is fulfillment of engagements undertaken by leaders and concerned persons in the field of struggle against AIDS, including provision of universal access to treatment, care, support and preventive treatment. During this five years’ mission, each year a certain theme has been defined according to current challenges.
The theme of the World AIDS Day 2010 is “Universal Access and Human Rights”. This theme calls to stop AIDS epidemic through a comprehensive approach to propaganda in the field of human rights.
The Republic of Belarus carries on a struggle against HIV/AIDS. This issue has been declared one of the major tasks of national policy in the sphere of public health and economic and social development of the Republic of Belarus. The National program of HIV epidemic prevention for 2006–2010 was adopted; a success in treating and preventing HIV epidemic has been achieved.
The exhibition presents more than 60 documents of international organizations (UNO, UNESCO, the European Union, the council of Europe etc.) in Russian and English: books, periodicals, UNO’s mimeographed materials (masthead), brochures and booklets.
The exposition includes the subject sections as follow:
- AIDS epidemic: a global survey;
- AIDS: what is it? Its influence upon people and society, treatment and care;
- HIV/AIDS prevention;
- International cooperation to fight against HIV/AIDS. UNAIDS activities;
- AIDS and human rights;
- National policy of fight against AIDS in the Republic of Belarus.
The exhibition is designed for social and medical workers, representatives of law-enforcement bodies, professors and students, pedagogues and parents, and also to everyone who is interested in HIV/AIDS issues.
