“The United Nations for Peace and Development,” a thematic exhibition timed to the United Nations Day, runs in the official documents service department (room 207), from October 17 to November 19.
This Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly on October 31, 1947 (resolution A/RES/168 (II)) , and since 1948 it has been observed on October 24. In 1948, the UN General Assembly declared this date the anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations.
The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945 after the Second World War by 51 countries committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights. It is currently made up of 193 Member States.
The work of the United Nations reaches every corner of the globe. The United Nations is the center for solving the problems of all humanity. This activity is carried out jointly by more than 30 related organizations forming the United Nations system. Everyday, the United Nations and other organizations in its system work to promote respect for human rights, protect the environment, combat disease, and reduce poverty. United Nations agencies develop rules and regulations for safety and efficient air traffic and help improve telecommunications and protect consumer interests. The United Nations is the initiator of international campaigns against drug trafficking and terrorism.The United Nations and its agencies assist refugees, implement demining programs, help increase food production and play a leading role in the fight against AIDS.
Much has changed since the United Nations was founded. The Organization’s membership has nearly quadrupled, while decolonization, population growth and globalization have each contributed to the redrawing of our modern landscape. As our world has evolved, so have the challenges. Advances in technology are connecting and affecting us all in ways we could not have imagined even a decade ago; financial, food, health and energy crises have shown no respect for national borders; and climate change and other ecological threats have highlighted that sustainable development depends equally on three component pillars: social development, economic growth and environmental protection.
The recent years have become eventful for the UN: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has entered into force, the Paris Agreement has been signed, and the new, ninth Secretary General of the Organization has been elected. The efforts to resolve acute political issues have continued under the auspices of the UN.
The UN’s efforts to rid future generations of the scourge of war, maintain peace and international security, develop friendly relations between the nations and resolve global economic, social, cultural and humanitarian issues are presented at the offered exhibition.
More than 100 publications from the collections of the Nationa Library in Russian and English are on display: books, periodicals, the UN mimeographed materials, brochures and booklets.
