From 11 January to 14 February, an anniversary book exhibition “The thirst for happiness”, devoted to the 70th anniversary of Belarusian poetess, translator Vera Verba’s birth, runs in the Belarus Literature Reading Room (room 205).


Subtle lyric and real master of a word Vera Verba (Gertrude Sokolova) came to her readers with tenderness, love and warm. She is the author of numerous poetry books. Poetess’s poems represent a lyrical confession about time and her generation.

The basic motives glorifies youth, love, motherhood, reflection about the history of native country and the problems of the present. Her works are characterized with dreaminess, romantic sublimity, and at the same time confusion to hard life challenges and understanding of complexity of female destiny are peculiar to them.

A rhythm "Ruchniki" (Towels) brought overall popularity and recognition to Vera Verba. It became a real national song due to the music of composer N. Petrenko and a special masterful performance of the ensemble “Pesnyary”.

The exposition acquaints visitors with the first poems of the poetess printed in 1958 in republican magazines, poetic collections "Vochy vyasny" (Spring eyes) (1962), "Belya pisma" (White letters) (1967), "Vysakosny god" (A leap-year) (1969), "Sinyaya bukhta" (A blue bay) (1975), "Alfa" (Alpha) (1978), "Yaraslauna" (1986), etc.

The section "Look at the world more widely" is devoted to translational activity of poetess Vera Verba. The writer translated from Ukranian, Jewish, Russian, Lithuanian and other languages. His best and more famous translation into Belarusian language is the story of R. Fraerman "Dziki sabaka Dzinga, ili apovests pra pervaye kakhanne" (Wild dog Dingo, or first love story)(1975).

Translations of Vera Verba’s works are presented in a separate section of the exhibition.

Editions about life and creativity of the poetess from encyclopaedic editions, books and magazines are shown in the section "To be surprised, searched and burnt".

"Soldier's Fate": on the 100th anniversary of Vasil Bykov and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the People's writer of Belarus, publicist and screenwriter Vasil Vladimirovich Bykov.
On this occasion, the National Library has prepared an anniversary exhibition "Soldier's fate", which highlights the great influence on the work of the Belarusian writer of his participation in the Great Patriotic War.
