From 6 January to 22 January, in the Visual documents reading room (room 307) runs a subject exhibition "The light of the Christmas star”.
The exposition presents the collection of graphic documents dedicated to the Orthodox Christmas celebrations.
Christmas is one of the main holidays of the Christian world which has been celebrated for more than 20 centuries. This is a joyful and serene holiday with a Christmas tree, gifts and solemn divine services in churches and temples.
Both church and folk traditions are closely intertwined in Christmas celebrations. Crèches with the figure of Christ are exposed not only in temples, but also in houses. Special breadboard models representing a grotto, small Jesus and Maiden Maria are made.
Christmas symbols are embodied in the works by the greatest artists of the world whose masterpieces turn both to the mind and to the heart. Reproductions of works by Italian and German masters of Renaissance are on display at the exhibition.
A plenty of graphic documents representing works of modern art are on display. These are congratulatory posters and boards, calendars, postcards and reproductions of works by modern artists depicting Christmas wreathes, candles, handbells. These symbols speak people about the greatest joy, the birth of Christ, and bring peace and serenity to human souls.
The exhibition presents over 150 documents: albums, reproductions, posters, calendars, postcards dedicated to Christmas celebrations, the history of the holiday and ancient and modern traditions.
