A book exhibition “The gatherer of the Eternity” timed to the 75th birth anniversary of Yanka Solomevich runs in the Belarusian literature reading room (room 205) from 18 October to 15 November.


Ivan Vladimirovich Solomevich (1938–2012) is a known Belarusian literary critic, folklorist and bibliographer.

The offered exposition consists of four sections which will let visitors into secrets of the researcher’s creative laboratory.

The first section “The footprints of unforgettable ancestors” presents books of the author including the most important The Dictionary of Belarusian Pseudonyms and Cryptonyms (16th–20th centuries) (1983). This book is a result of a long research and discoveries, the first in Belarusian literary criticism encyclopedia of deciphered pseudonyms of Belarusian literati and political figures. The second edition of this encyclopedia (modified and supplemented) with more than 20 thousand pseudonyms is to be published soon. All his life Ivan Solomevich worked on this book but didn’t see it published. The exhibition name “The gatherer of the Eternity” comprehensively reflects Ivan Solomevich’s meaning of life. He is the only author who not simply collected so many pseudonyms in one book, but also discovered to whom they belonged. And this is nothing else than the Eternity. The publication of the first variant of the encyclopedia has become a revolutionary event, and its second edition will be an original monument to the tireless researcher.

Ivan Solomevich’s book about the life and creative career of M. Fedorovsky is the evidence of the author’s talent as an encyclopaedist and researcher.

The researcher’s encyclopaedic approaches to different phenomena of Belarusian culture manifested in the sphere of study of folklore and bibliophilia. As a bibliographer Ivan Solomevich compiled the first encyclopedia of Belarusian folklore Belarusian Folklore (1926–1963) (1964) which contains about 1 206 publications. This edition became the basis to a fundamental directory of M. Grinblat Belarusian Ethnography and Folklore (1972).

Ivan Solomevich also made literary translations from Russian, Ukrainian and Polish into the Belarusian language.

The exhibition sections “The pages of biography”, “Y. Solomevich as a translator”, “The tireless worker” contain collections, translations, encyclopedias and periodicals about the researcher’s life and creative career.

Students of the Belarusian State Academy of Music visited the National library

On April 18, the students of the Belarusian State Academy of Music visited the National Library of Belarus as part of the environmental education and upbringing program. They got acquainted with the thematic book exhibition "Water is a wonderful gift of Nature" dedicated to World Water Day. The exposition is presented in the documents of international organizations reading room (room 207 g).
