A thematic exhibition "Earth: One Planet for All" dedicated to World Environment Day is on show in the Official Document Service Department (room 207) from June 2 to July 13.
The UN General Assembly proclaimed the World Environment Day on 15 December 1972 at the 27th session (Resolution No. A/RES/2994 (XXVII), where the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) was also established, a new organization under the auspices of which the Day is celebrated on 5 June each year.
By shaping the global environmental agenda and promoting the environmental component of the concept of sustainable development, UNEP is an authoritative advocate for the environment around the world. In March 2019, at the initiative of El Salvador, supported by more than 70 countries, the UN General Assembly declared 2021–2030 the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
Ecosystems support all life on Earth. The healthier the ecosystems are, the healthier the planet and humanity are. Forests provide drinking water to a third of the world's largest cities and are home to 80% of amphibians, 75% of birds and 68% of mammals. Mires store about 30% of all soil carbon. Trees growing on the streets reduce the maximum summer air temperature by about 0.5 to 2 degrees Celsius, which has a positive impact on the lives of at least 68 million people. Finally, half of the world's GDP depends on nature. All the funds invested in ecosystem restoration have a chance to return a 30-fold economic benefit. This will contribute to the achievement of all 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, including the elimination of poverty and hunger.
The goal of the UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration is to prevent, stop and reverse their degradation on all continents and in the world's oceans. The success of this endeavour depends on the participation of each individual. This is what became the official theme for World Environment Day 2021.
Under the motto “Reimagine. Recreate. Restore.” the UN Environment Program invites everyone to join the global campaign to revive degraded ecosystems: forests, farmland, grasslands and savannas, rivers and lakes, oceans and coasts, towns and cities, mires and mountains. By supporting local conservation and revitalization projects, redefining consumption habits in favour of more responsible choices, planting trees, cleaning river banks or simply allowing nature to heal itself, we contribute to the value of local ecosystems for society and the conservation of biodiversity.
The exhibition presents more than 80 documents in Russian and English. Among them are books, brochures, official UN materials and periodicals.
