A book exhibition "The chronicler of the epoch” timed to the 90th birthday of people’s writer of Belarus Ivan Shamyakin (1921–2004) runs in the National Library of Belarus (second floor, circular hall) from January 25 to March 7.
During his long writer’s career Ivan Shamyakin wrote a lot of serious literary works: novels, stories, short stories, plays and screenplays. A few books of his journalistic articles appeared in print as well.
The young writer’s debut novel “The Deep Flow” (1948) made him extremely popular.
The pentalogy ”Uneasy Happiness” (1957–1965) is based on the author’s biography and biographies of his friends.
The novel “The Heart on the Palm” (1957) is the most known book by Ivan Shamyakin. No one had written about Stalinism in such a way before. In fact, thanks to this novel the writer gained popularity and won recognition.
In different years the author’s outstanding books were published: the story “The Revenge” (1945), the novels “All The Best” (1953), “The Streams” (1956), “Snowy Winters” (1968), “Atlantes and Caryatids” (1974), “I’ll Take Your Pain” (1979).
Ivan Shamyakin was no stranger to dramatics. He created the dramas “Don’t Believe In Silence”, (1957), “The Children Of One House” (1967), “Autumn Examination”» (1973), and the comedies “The Banishment Of The Whore” (1961) and “The Battle In The Meadow” (1972) which were successfully staged in Belarus and abroad.
One of the writer’s last works, the story “Glorify Maria”, became a notable book as well. Dedicated to Ivan Shamyakin’s beloved wife, this book is about their love, their long life together and the bitter loss.
The writer’s books are popular both in Belarus and abroad. His best works are translated into Bulgarian, Serbo-Croatian, Polish, Czech, Chinese, Spanish and other languages. He is the laureate of the USSR State Prize (1951), Y. Kolas Literary Prize (1959), Y. Kolas State Prize of Belarus (1968), the USSR Ministry of Defense Literary Prize (1978), The State Prize of Belarus (1982), the Prize of the Union State and Russia (2002). A street in Minsk and Mozyr State Pedagogical University were named after Ivan Shamyakin.
