From 17 September to 19 October, a book exhibition “The call of native shores” timed to the 90th birth anniversary of Belarusian writer and translator Arthur Volsky (1924–2002) runs in the Belarusian literature reading room (auditorium 205).
Arthur Volsky’s (real name Volsky-Zeydel) love of the Belarusian word was tested by the time and the distance. In 1942 he was called up to navy fleet and about 10 years he served in the Far East. At the age of 18 he already considered himself not only a seaman, but also a writer, as in fact his first story appeared when he was 13 only. Many poems in his books of poetry Далёкія і блізкія прычалы (Berths Far Off And Near, 1962), Дабрата (Kindness, 1966), Выратавальны круг (Life Buoy, 1974), Строма (Stroma, 1982) are dedicated to Soviet seamen’s hard service and feats of arms.
However Arthur Volsky devoted his greatest care to young readers. The writer was among the first post-war authors to start talk wisely, intelligibly and excitedly to children. Today Arthur Volsky’s works are still demanded by wide public.
The offered exhibition presents the author’s books for children – poems, stories and fairytales Маленькім сябрам (To My Little Friends, 1955), Казкі з праўдай напалам (Half Truthful Fairytales, 1996), Адэльчыны ручнікі (Adel’s Towels, 2002), Выйшаў зайчык пагуляць (The Leveret Going to Walk, 2009) etc., and also reading-books for primary school compiled by the writer.
For a long time Arthur Volsky had headed the Belarusian Republican Theatre of the Young Spectator (1966–1978). He is the author of numerous theatrical plays: Сцяпан – вялікі пан (Styapan The Great Sir, the first Belarusian operetta staged at the State Theatre of Musical Comedy of Belarus, 1979), Тры Іваны - тры браты (Three Ivans, Three Brothers, 1985), Граф Глінскі-Папялінскі (Count Glinsky-Papyalinsky, 1986) etc. The writer also translated into the Belarusian language about 20 theatrical plays.
A special exhibition section presents Arthur Volsky as a translator. Gennady Buravkin called the translator “a pathfinder at all times”: he was one of the first post-war Belarusian poets who started to lay bridges of friendship to neighbor peoples in other Soviet republics. Arthur Volsky translated from the Lithuanian, Estonian, Ukrainian and Jewish languages.
A part of the exhibition is dedicated to the author’s poems which are well known abroad and translated into the languages of the USSR peoples and other foreign languages.
The last exhibition section acquaints with publications about the writer’s life and creative career.
