From 10 October to 10 November, a book and illustration exhibition “The Belarusian ornament” timed to the Cultural Workers’ Day runs in the National Library of Belarus (2nd floor, circular corridor).
The Belarusian ornament is an original code and transmission of information about the outlook, faiths, custom and traditions of our people. The ornament is a manifestation of the national culture which shows the people’s sense of harmony and graphically transmits our ancestors’ knowledge of the world.
The ornament in the Belarusian applied art was not simply a decoration, it was also regarded as a protective amulet. The belt, the shirt, the apron and the towel had a particular symbolic and magical meaning. Our ancestors’ belief was an interweaving of the ancient heathen faith with Christianity which arrived later. This belief was based on the worshipping of constructive labor, zealousness, good, justice and love.
The exhibition presents encyclopedias, reference books, textbooks, scientific and popular scientific editions on the history of ornamental art, classification, styles and features of ornaments, and meaning contents of ornamental symbols. Also editions on display give an idea of the use of ornaments in architecture and in design of furniture, books, ceramics, textiles, weapon, clothes, and even in national symbols.
The exposition features a rich illustrative material as well. It will be interesting to cultural workers, pedagogues, tutors, and also to all who are respectful to their ancestors and national culture.
