The book exhibition "The Belarusian festival of food" runs in the Belarusian literature reading room (205), on 1–30 December.


Contrary to popular belief, the Belarusian cuisine is not only potatoes. Historically, our people had many cultural, economic and political inter-ethnic communications in the course of many centuries. The Belarusian cuisine has absorbed the Slavic, Baltic, Jewish, partly German culinary tradition, and even recipes all over the USSR. Nevertheless, it has its own national characteristics, which were formed in the late XIX century. In general, our cuisine is one of the most diverse in Europe.

The first section of the exhibition “A culinary journey” is devoted to the history of food in Belarus from the most ancient times to the XX century. The publication on display reveal all aspects of the national culinary heritage: recipes of gentry and peasant dishes, methods of cooking and food storage, rules of conduct related to food consumption, holidays and daily meals, the time and sequence of their use, tableware. The section features monographs, encyclopedias and periodicals in Belarusian, Russian, Polish and English, such as T. Novogrodsky’s The evolution of the Belarusians’ food tradition in the XIX–XX centuries (2015), A. Vashchenko’s The Belarusian cuisine (2015), A. Bely’s Our food (2010), V. Zavadskaya’s The Lithuanian cook (2013), The Lithuanian hostess (2012) etc.

The second part of the exhibition In search of the taste includes publications about the development of the modern food industry in Belarus, including the activity of the largest domestic enterprises Spartak, Kommunarka, Santa Bremor, Olivaria and others.

The last section The literary cocktail presents fiction associated with the theme of culinary, in Belarusian and Russian languages

"Soldier's Fate": on the 100th anniversary of Vasil Bykov and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the People's writer of Belarus, publicist and screenwriter Vasil Vladimirovich Bykov.
On this occasion, the National Library has prepared an anniversary exhibition "Soldier's fate", which highlights the great influence on the work of the Belarusian writer of his participation in the Great Patriotic War.
