From April 26th to May 20th, the book exhibition “Preserving the culture of our ancestors: Belarusian national holidays, rites and traditions” runs in the Belarusian literature reading room (room 205).
The spiritual riches which we have inherited from our ancestors is our pride, and, in order to keep our originality in the cultural environment, it is necessary to preserve and transfer it to next generations. Our riches are national holidays, ceremonies and traditions. Even today they have not lost their target orientation and applicability in the people’s life keeping one of the most interesting pages of people’s everyday life, our national cultural heritage.
Materials presented at the exposition will allow visitors to learn more about the way our ancestors celebrated the most significant calendar and family-household holidays, and will teach how to use elements of traditional ceremonialism in modern public holidays and family celebrations.
All year round our ancestors lived caring of the earth and the harvest. There was a whole system of holidays, ceremonies, games and entertainments which were fixed in people’s life and served as certain reference points during agricultural works and rest in the annual cycle. Editions and publications in the exhibition section “The rainbow of time” are dedicated to winter holidays (Christmas-tide, Pancake week, Candlemas Day), spring holidays (Easter, St. George’s Day, Whitsunday), summer holidays (St. John Baptist’s Day, Dozhinki), autumn holidays (Bogach, Dedy (All Saints’ Day), and other calendar holidays.
The section “Primordial way of life” presents literature devoted to family-ceremonial holidays, and also interdictions, instructions and rules of behavior in the family connected with preparation and carrying out of family-patrimonial ceremonies – birth, christening, wedding, funeral.
The section “Holiday is coming” will be interesting to teachers, form-masters, tutors, heads of folklore and theatrical circles. It contains methodical advice and recommendations on arrangement and carrying out of morning performances devoted to national holidays and ceremonies, and also scenarios of the Pancake week, Easter, wedding and other calendar-ceremonial and family-household holidays.
The exposition includes about 300 books and magazines.
