From 12 September to 14 October, a book exhibition "Peace. Security. Development" dedicated to the International Day of Peace runs at the Official Documents Division (2nd floor, room 207).
The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by resolution A/RES/36/67 of the United Nations General Assembly to coincide with its opening session, which was held annually on the third Tuesday of September. In 2001, the General Assembly unanimously adopted resolution A/RES/55/282 on the celebration of the International Day of Peace on 21 September beginning from 2002.
The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. The Assembly decreed the International Day of Peace to be observed as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence, and suggested for all nations and the peoples to honor a cessation of hostilities during the day.
In 2013, this day is held under the motto "Education for Peace". The United Nations will examine the role education can play in fostering global citizenship. It is not enough to teach children how to read, write and count. Education has to cultivate mutual respect for others and the world in which we live, and help people forge more just, inclusive and peaceful societies. Education should be directed at ensuring the younger generation responsible for everything that goes around, it is a condition for dynamic movement forward of human civilization.
The General Assembly calls on everyone – whether governments, parties to conflicts, religious institutions, community leaders, the media, academics, or civil society groups – to play their part in the International Day of Peace by supporting peace education programmes, protecting students and teachers from conflict, helping rebuild schools destroyed by war, and ensuring all girls and boys have access to a quality education that includes learning about resolving and preventing conflicts.
The events of the past year – wars, terrorism, military expenditure, deep contradiction that separate peoples and individuals around the world – are caused an unprecedented urgency of the International Day of Peace this year as well .
The exhibition includes more than 100 documents that reveal the work of international organizations, governmental and non-governmental agencies and groups in the field of peace and security. Most of them are documents of international organizations (UN, UNESCO, the European Union, the Council of Europe, etc.) in Russian and English: books, periodicals, mimeographed materials of the United Nations.
The exhibition contains the following sections:
