Peace and Security for All Peoples

The thematic exhibition "Peace and Security for All Peoples" dedicated to the International Day of Peace is opened in the Official Documents reading room (207) from September 2 to October 15.

This Day was established by the UN General Assembly (resolution) in 1981 and was celebrated annually on the third Tuesday of September: the opening day of the Assembly. Twenty years later, in 2001, the General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution in which it decided that since 2002, International Peace Day will be celebrated annually on September 21.

Peace is one of the most urgent needs of mankind. The world defines the most important mission of the UN and unites its work across the planet: from peacekeeping and preventive diplomacy to the promotion of human rights and its development.

International Peace Day symbolizes the deep desire of all peoples to live together free and equal in dignity and rights. History has shown that no matter how fierce the conflict may be, it can be ended, peace can reign, and reconciliation can be achieved.

The United Nations calls on all countries and peoples to welcome the cessation of hostilities during the celebration of the International Day of Peace and to hold celebrations in the form of education and public awareness of issues related to peace.

Every year Day of Peace is dedicated to a specific topic. The theme in 2019 is the "Climate Action for Peace". This slogan emphasizes the importance of combating climate change as a way to preserve and maintain peace on the planet.

Climate change is an obvious threat to peace and security on earth. As a result of natural disasters, three times as many people are moving than due to conflicts: millions of people are forced to leave their homes in search of a safe place to live. Salinization of water and crops threatens to undermine food security and has an increasingly negative impact on public health. Growing tensions associated with the distribution of resources and the massive displacement of people affect all countries and all continents.

Peace can only be achieved if specific measures are taken to combat climate change. On September 23, the United Nations holds a climate summit, during which concrete plans will be discussed to accelerate action to implement the Paris Agreement. This summit will give a new impetus to the “race to combat climate change”, in which countries, enterprises, cities and civil society participate, and without which the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals is impossible.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals were unanimously adopted by 193 UN Member States at the historic Heads of State Summit held in New York in September 2015. The new agenda for the period until 2030 calls on states to begin to take measures aimed at achieving these goals over the next 15 years. The theme of the world goes through all 17 goals, each of which is one of the components of the global architecture of the world. The realization of each goal is crucial for peace and prosperity.

At the exhibition there are presented about 100 documents that reveal the work of international organizations, governmental and non-governmental institutions in the field of maintaining peace and security. A great part of the exposition is represented with documents of international organizations (UN, UNESCO, European Union, Council of Europe, etc.) in Russian and English: books, periodicals, mimeographed materials of the UN.

The exhibition includes the following thematic sections:

• International agreements and international legal instruments for the maintenance of peace and security
• Disarmament, nuclear disarmament
• Peacekeeping and peacebuilding
• Combating terrorism and nuclear terrorism
• Human rights and peacekeeping
• Democratization and a culture of peace.

The exhibition will be interesting to specialists in the field of world politics, diplomacy, international relations, international law, conflict resolution, as well as students, undergraduates, political and public figures and everyone who cares about the world on Earth.
