The exhibition “Music will tell about the eternal”, dedicated to the 160th anniversary of Russian composer A.D. Kastalsky, has been opened since November 21 till December 30 in the music and audiovisual documents reading room (305).
A wonderful master of choral writing and expert of choir culture, pedagogue and musician-enlightener Alexander Kastalsky (1856–1926) is a prominent researcher, whose works marked a new stage in theoretical studies of Russian folk songs.
Alexander was very talented by nature. He wrote poems, was involved in acting, and was fond of painting and photography. But he had a serious attitude only to his musical activities. The composer is a key figure of spiritual and musical revival at the turn of centuries. His church compositions (nearly 130 chorals), and those that appeared from church singing genres or related to them compositions (monumental Fraternal Commemoration, cantatas, musical performances and restorations) are precious contributions to Russian art. Operas The Grey Wolf and Ivan Tsarevich, Klara Milich, cycle From Past Centuries, a cappella chorals, music to drama performances Sten’ka Razin, King Lear, Hannele, Russian folk songs processing are among his works.
The main part of the exposition is sheet music and audio documents from the funds of The National Library of Belarus. Visitors can listen to spiritual works performed by the male choir of the Moscow monastery of the Holy Trinity St. Sergius Lavra (Christ is Risen!), the Patriarchal Choir of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior (Exaltation of the Holy Trinity), the choir of the Minsk Theological School (Gentle Light), the choir of the Cathedral of the Dormition in Odessa (troparion of the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord), etc.
Books and publications from periodicals, dedicated to life and work of Kastalsky, articles and rcollections of the composer, his work Properties of the Russian Folk Music System (1923) are at the exhibition.
