The exhibition "Music of poetry", dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Russian composer G. Sviridov (1915–1998), has been organized in the Music and audiovisual documents reading room (305) from 10 to 31 December.

The work of Georgy Sviridov is in the treasury of the Russian and world culture. Having absorbed all the best, the composer created a new peculiar style, which is based on high moral ideal of Christian spirituality. His music has a deep content and calls upon eternal everlasting values.

The composer was born on December 16, 1915 in the town of Fatezh in the Kursk Governorate. When he was nine, he moved to Kursk. He started playing the piano here. But very soon the studies finished and the young music lover was captivated by the balalaika. He started to play it and was accepted into the amateur orchestra of the Russian folk instruments.

The young musician attended classes of piano playing at the Kursk music school from 1929 to 1932, where at the entry exam he performed his own march. He studied piano and was taught by I. Braudo and M. Yudin at the Leningrad Central Music College. The works he had written at that time became popular very quickly. A cycle of lyrical romances based on the poetry of Alexander Pushkin, which consists of 6 romances, introduced to a listener an independent peculiar composer who wasn’t twenty yet. Then Sviridov studied at the Leningrad Conservatory under Peter Ryazanov and Dmitri Shostakovich. In 1937 he became a member of the Union of the USSR composers.

The significant place takes vocal music on the poetic word. The heritage of practically all Russian poets-classicists is reflected. The talented composer wrote music to poems by V. Mayakovski (Pathetic Oratorio), S. Yesenin (To the memory of Sergei Yesenin, song cycle My Father is a Farmer, cantata Wooden Russia, poem Cast off Russia), by N. Nekrasov (Spring Cantata), A. Pushkin (Pushkin’s Garland), A. Blok, B. Pasternak, M. Lermontov, A. Prokofyev, M. Isakovski, A. Tvardovski and translated texts by W. Shakespeare, R. Burns, A. Isaakyan.

The most significant in the area of the instrumental music are Piano Trio, Sonata and Two Partitas for Piano, Album of Plays for Children, Music for Chamber Orchestra. The wide recognition received Orchestra Suite Time, Forward! and Snow Storm (musical illustrations after Pushkin for orchestra).

The exhibition presents books and publications from periodicals dedicated to the life and work of Sviridov. The main part of the exposition is music publications and audio documents from the funds of the National Library. Visitors have an opportunity to listen to the composer’s works by A. Vedernikov, E. Nesterenko, Y. Gulyaev, I. Arkhipova, E. Obraztsova, the Academic Choir of Russian Song of All-Union Radio, the Moscow Chamber Choir, the State Chamber Choir of the Republic of Belarus and other groups.
