From 12 January to 27 February, the exhibition "Living in Harmony with Nature", dedicated to the Decade on Biological Diversity, runs at the National Library of Belarus (3rd floor, Circular hall).

International Day of Biological Diversity is celebrated every year on May 22 since 2001. This day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1995 by a special resolution on the recommendation of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity which was held in 1994.

Nature provides people with everything necessary for life. Biological resources are the foundation on which any civilization is built. However, these resources are not everlasting.

Human impact on the environment is often fatal. Industrial waste gets into lakes and rivers and makes them useless to life. Exhaust fumes and smoke from the burned fuel pollute air and destroy the ozone layer, which causes climate changes and threatens ecological disaster. It is therefore important to take care of a reasonable use at all levels and renewal of natural resources and biodiversity conservation. These restrictions on hunting, protection of animal habitats, creation of reserves and control of environmental pollution are that measures that promote the conservation of biological diversity of the planet.

Materials on the diversity of flora and fauna of our planet which acquaint us with national parks and reserves of the world and reflect environmental problems and their solutions are on display at the exhibition "Living in Harmony with Nature". A separate block is devoted to books on environmental protection and conservation of biodiversity in Belarus.

At the exposition among the most interesting illustrated encyclopedias, dictionaries, photo albums and guidebooks are the Red Book of the Republic of Belarus in two volumes and the encyclopedia "Blakіtny skarb Belarusi"(Blue treasure of Belarus). They are recognized to be the best encyclopedias on the results of the national contest "Art of a Book". These editions include descriptions of all water bodies in our country. A unique photo album "Belovezhskoe Chudo" (A Miracle of the Belovezhskaya Pushcha), which was released to the 600th anniversary of the establishment of the protected mode in the Belovezhskaya Pushcha, tells us how our remote ancestors took care of the species diversity of flora and fauna.

We sincerely hope that this exhibition will not only carry its visitors with the story of amazing variety of wildlife, but also will make to think seriously about what each of us individually and a society as a whole can do to prevent an ecological catastrophe and to save our home for future generations.
