From November 13, 2007 to December 7, 2007 in the Official Documents Department (second floor, room 207) is open a book exhibition “Life without Violence” dedicated to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
This Day was announced by the General Assembly of the UN (resolution 54/134) in 1999. The world community annually celebrates this Day on November 25.
Violence against women is a widespread phenomenon which resides in every society and culture. The violence affects women independently of their race, ethnic group, social status, income, origin, and other circumstances. The violence embarrasses women’s self-actualization, reduces the economic growth, and destroys the development of the whole society.
The elimination of the violence against women is one of the most urgent issues of the modern society.
The displayed materials acquaint visitors with the activities of the UN and other international organizations in the field of the elimination of violence against women, the international legal and strategic conception developed by member states of the UN in the field of women’s rights (including the right to the life without violence), the research of gender issues, and the role of women in family and society.
The displayed materials present the UN statistics on the violence against women all over the world. Annually 5 thousand women are killed by members of their families. On average every third women is a victim of rape or major violence. Annually thousands of women become victims of human traffic. In several countries the annihilation of female embryos and babies is still a common practice.
A particular attention is paid to the issues of human traffic and violence against women during armed conflicts.
A particular section of the exhibition is dedicated to the issues of violence against women in the Republic of Belarus. Materials displayed there reveal the activities of Belarusian state in the field of prevention, suppression, and eradication of violence against women. The efforts of Belarusian society, state, and non-governmental organizations should be devoted to the women’s life protection and development of a society where women and men would enjoy the equal rights.
The exposition presents over 100 materials from the NLB’s collections in Russian, English, French, and German languages: books, periodicals, the UN mimeographed materials, brochures, and booklets.
We invite to the exhibition students, professors, social pedagogues, psychologists, experts in fighting against human traffic, and workers of human rights and non-governmental organizations.
