The exhibition "International migration in the XXI century", dedicated to the International Migrants Day has been opened from December 9, 2015 to January 5, 2016 in the official documents department (207).
This day was announced at the 55th UN General Assembly session on December 4, 2000 (resolution 55/93) and is annually observed on December 18. This date was chosen because it was on 18 December 1990 that the UN adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (resolution 45/158). This Convention is a universal migrants’ rights protection program, ratified by 48 states.
The term migration (from lat. migratio) means moving or relocation. People have always been moving across the planet, overcoming difficulties and heading for a better place to live. Wanderers looked for new grazing lands, frontier men explored new continents and lands.
New era opened new opportunities and new challenges for states all over the world. The number of people who move to other places is increasing because of the globalization and transport achievements.
The international migration includes voluntary and forced relocation for political, social, economic reasons. The population of almost all countries is involved in the world migration process. Wars and conflicts, calamities, higher level of well being and salary abroad are among reasons for migration. International migration became a global problem that takes an important place in the international agenda.
According to the UN assessments, the number of migrants who live not in their country is 232 mln. people or 3.2% of the world population in 2013, 175 mln. – in 2000, 154 mln. – in 1990.
Migration is one of the best indicators of the socio-economic condition of the society. It has a positive contribution to the economic and cultural development of both countries sending migrants and the countries receiving their remittances, trade, investments, enterprise creation, and through the transfer of technology, knowledge and skills. But it has negative consequences, e.g. the expanding scale of illegal immigration and the growing flows of refugees and asylum seekers. In this regard, the need for enhanced migration policy that would allow to overcome the negative consequences and make constructive use of the benefits of the international migration.
Held in 2006 the high-level dialog on the international migration and development became a defining moment in the consideration of the UN member states ways and means to maximize the benefits of the international migration for development and minimizing of its negative effects.
In October 2013 there was held the next high-level dialog on the international migration and development on the topic "Bring the migration into action". As a result, the member states adopted the declaration, that condemns the manifestations and signs of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance against migrants and often applied to them stereotypes.
