From July 1, 2009 to August 24, 2009, in the National Library of Belarus (the second floor, circular hall) is open an exhibition “Great politician. Skillful diplomat.” dedicated to Andrei Gromyko (1909–1989), the outstanding Soviet politician.




Andrei Gromyko had started his career under Stalin and retired when Gorbachev was at the head of the USSR. In the most complicated periods in the history of the USSR, Andrei Gromyko headed the Soviet Embassies in the USA and Great Britain and held a post of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the USSR for 28 years (from1957 to 1985). This is undoubtedly the record of the XX century that any modern Russian politician may hardly break.Andrei Gromyko was born in Belarusian city Gomel, and city-dwellers are proud of their eminent compatriot. There is a monument to “the Diplomat Number One” in the center of Gomel and a memorial hall in the district museum. This person went down in history as one of the greatest diplomats and the most outstanding politicians.

National Library of Belarus has arranged an anniversary book-illustrative exhibition dedicated to the legendary person. It totals about 200 materials from the Library’s collections (books, journals, newspapers, photos) that reveal the complicated history of the USSR and life and career of Andrei Gromyko who was a witness and participant of crucial historical events.

At the exposition are displayed memoirs and monographs byAndrei Gromyko, materials of the United States General Assemblies and scientific and practical conferences, memoirs by Andrei Gromyko’s daughter E.A. Gromyko-Piradova as well as essays by V.M. Sukhodrev, the diplomat’s personal translator and diplomat and academician S.V. Tikhvinsky.

Particular sections of the exhibition are dedicated to the history of the USSR. There are displayed different documents that reveal the USSR foreign policy, its evolution conditioned by external and internal circumstances as well as personality of the Soviet leaders. Books and diaries written by witnesses and participants of historical events reflect morals and manners of the Soviet political elite, political and ideological methods used in the Central Committee of the CPSU and other angles of the Soviet history and policy.

"Soldier's Fate": on the 100th anniversary of Vasil Bykov and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the People's writer of Belarus, publicist and screenwriter Vasil Vladimirovich Bykov.
On this occasion, the National Library has prepared an anniversary exhibition "Soldier's fate", which highlights the great influence on the work of the Belarusian writer of his participation in the Great Patriotic War.
