From November 6, 2007 to December 10, 2007, in the Documents of International Organizations Reading Room (second floor, room 207g) is open a book exhibition “From the Intolerance to the Harmony” timed to the International Day of Tolerance (November, 16).
Materials exposed at the exhibition reveal the issue of tolerance and intolerance. There is one of the most urgent issues of the present as under exciting conditions of a tough economic competition, migration of population, and difficult relationships among religious confessions the society feels an acute need for tolerance. In the context of global changes in social, political, and spiritual life of the world community the issues of tolerance take on special significance. Which are the ways, shapes, and consequences of global social changes? How correlate these economic processes with peoples’ peaceful aspirations and principles of tolerance, non-violence, agreement, and cooperation which are particularly strengthened in the 21st century? These and other issues are revealed at the exhibition which includes over 50 documents of international organizations (UN, UNESCO, European Union and others) in Russian, English, and Polish languages: books, periodicals, mimeographed materials of the UN, brochures, and booklets. Displayed materials reveal issues and challenges of the intolerance, and suggest various ways, methods, and programmes of the fight against extremism, xenophobia, violence, and intolerance, as well as the role of governments, nongovernmental and international organizations in the strengthening of the peace culture, pluralism, mutual respect, and peaceful co-existence.
