The Book Museum will present unique exhibits for the first time: the 19th century correspondence of the Khraptovich family and recovered from abroad books from their famous library in Shchorsy.

Three books and correspondence of the Khraptovich family were returned to Belarus from Germany in February 2020 and have been stored in the National Library ever since. The return happened due to the efforts of the charity fund “Shchorsy and Khraptoviches”. Once, the library, started by Ioakhim Litavor Khraptovich in the 18th century was considered one of the richest in East Europe.

Both the ancient books and the correspondence in French are the extremely valuable monuments of their time, which neither were published nor demonstrated to the public until now. Last year, with consent of the last owners, the discovered valuable documents were delivered to Belarus. During the opening of the exhibition, the books and correspondence of the Khraptoviches will be officially transferred to the National Library of Belarus for safekeeping.

In addition, a briefing for journalists will be held. Representatives of the National Library and the "Shchorsy and Khraptoviches" charity fund will speak about the first experience of studying the books and correspondence of the Khraptoviches; pay attention to their importance for Belarusian and world culture; and also talk about new steps in studying the history of the famous family, its heritage in Belarus and abroad, and the ways to return the heritage to the homeland.

The exhibition will also feature works of art by BNTU students who worked as volunteers in summer camps for the improvement of the Khraptovich estate in Shchorsy in 2018–2019.

The exhibition "The Khraptovich Library: on the Way Back" is organized jointly by the "Shchorsy and Khraptoviches" charity fund and the National Library of Belarus.

The exhibition will open at 4 pm at the Book Museum (room 347) and will run until April 30, 2021.
The end date is subject to change.

The opening is free.

The opening hours of the exhibition correspond to the library’s opening hours.
Admission is by the library card or by the Social and Cultural Centre ticket.

A Brief History of Reading in Four Acts with Interludes

3 Apr 2021

Arguably, the history of reading is the most curious and non-standard element of book culture, because the process is so natural! We wonder about the origins of book spines, bookmarks, capital letters and archetypal plots, but what about reading itself? From clay tablets to libraries, from reading aloud to speed reading: a fascinating story was under our own very noses all this time. It's time to dig into it.
