From 4 January to 9 February, in the Official documents division (room 207) runs the subject book exhibition “Energy for all and for good of all” dedicated to the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All.

This Year was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly at its 65th session on 20 December, 2010 (resolution 65/151) as a token of acknowledgement of the importance of energy for a sustainable development.

Today 1,4 billion people have no access to modern energy sources, and over three billions people in developing countries use traditional kinds of biomass for cooking and heating. Even when energy supply services are available, millions needy people are unable to pay them. Providing of access to modern and inexpensive energy supply services will promote poverty reduction and improvement of living conditions of the majority of the world population.

The United Nations system operates in the most different directions with the purpose of rendering assistance to developing countries in the field of energy – from education, vocational training and strengthening of potential to the aid in realization of political reforms and granting of power service. Though the steps to using renewable, considerably less polluting energy sources have been undertaken, the growth of demand still advances the introduction of capacities based on renewable energy.

Power services exert a strong influence on labor productivity, public health, education, climate change, food and water resources safety, and also communication service. Absence of access to nonpolluting, inexpensive and reliable energy sources constrains the development of human potential and social and economic development being the basic obstacle in the way of achievement of the development millennium goals formulated in the Millennium Declaration.

Realizing the necessity of serious measures to increase the efficiency of use of energy and to struggle against power poverty on the global level, within the limits of the United Nations Organization a new “power” structure, the UN-Energy, has been created. This is the United Nations interorganizational mechanism whose activity is directed on the development of cooperation in the field of elaboration of energy policy and its implementation. This coordination group in structure of 20 establishments of the United Nations system carries out a new global initiative under the name “Sustainable energy for all” directed on the achievement by 2030 of three basic purposes:

  • provision of general access to modern energy services;
  • 40-percent reduction in world power consumption;
  • 30-percent Increase in use of renewable energy sources all over the world.

Realization of the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All in 2012 is one more chance to remind the world community about the necessity of taking measures for the expansion of access to reliable, economically effective, socially comprehensible and ecologically safe energy supply and power resources in the interests of a sustainable development.

The offered exhibition includes about 100 documents, mostly those of international organizations (UN, UNESCO, the European Union, the Council of Europe etc) in Russian and English: books, periodicals, the United Nations mimeographed materials, brochures and booklets.

The exposition consists of the following subject sections:

    The world energy: current state, problems and prospects.
  • The international energy and ecological safety.
  • Renewable energy sources and energy-saving.
  • Energy policy and the ways of energy development in separate countries and regions.
  • The energy policy of the Republic of Belarus.

The exhibition is designed for specialists in energy, engineers, ecologists, political scientists, sociologists, and also students, postgraduates and university professors.
