From January 13 to March 30, the book exhibition “Election Legislation and Elections in the Modern World associated with the 20th anniversary of the Electoral Code of the Republic of Belarus was opened in the Legal Information Room (room 207b).

In any modern democratic state, elections are the most important form of sovereign democracy regulated by regulatory legal enactments, which together constitute electoral legislation. These are acts of the national legal system, as well as international law.

The Electoral Code of the Republic of Belarus is a codified act that most fully regulates the vast majority of issues related to the organization and conduct of elections of the President of the Republic of Belarus and deputies of various levels, as well as the organization and conduct of republican and local referenda. The Code was signed by the President of the Republic of Belarus on February 20, 2000. The Electoral Code is divided into General and Special parts. Electoral legislation is one of the fastest growing branches of law. This area of legislation reflects the realities emerging in society and takes into account global trends in this area. It is constantly being improved and responsive to changes. Certain changes were made to the Electoral Code, the most significant of which appeared in the Code in 2010. It is important to note that the introduction of every, even insignificant at first glance, change is preceded by careful work, analysis of past election campaigns and development of proposals for improving legislation on the basis of such an analysis. A certain role in this work is played by international election observers. Their election results reports and recommendations are also carefully scrutinized.

Democratic elections presuppose personal freedom of citizens, guaranteed by the state, freedom of opinion, freedom of association, manifestations, movement, the right to receive reliable information, etc. The participation of each citizen in the governing of his or her country is one of the key factors for the effective exercising of other rights and fundamental freedoms of citizens, including political, socio-economic and cultural.

The exposition has about 80 documents: books, brochures, periodicals in Russian and Ukrainian.

The exhibition will be useful to the participants of the election process, the organizers of the election, specialists who provide legal support for legislative activities, political scientists, scientists, teachers and all those who interested in issues of domestic and foreign electoral law and holding of free and democratic elections.
