The international community celebrates the 50th anniversary of Earth Day this year. Earth Day is an international campaign, it is the largest civil event in the world, which is associated with the emergence of the modern environmental movement. The exhibition project "EcoChallenge" is dedicated to this day. Posters and books on environmental topics from the collections of the National Library of Belarus are presented there.

Ecology is inextricably linked with man throughout history. This topic has become most relevant for the future of mankind in recent decades. If at the beginning of the environmental movement, the responsibility for the future of the planet was assigned mainly to states, then recently the confidence that it is possible to save the Earth only with the awareness and participation of every person has been growing louder.

The two parts of the EcoChallenge exhibition project are the book and the art. The parts are aimed at clearly demonstrating the observed dynamics.

The art part consists of the best examples of environmental posters. It covers 1970–2000 chronologically and conditionally divided into three stages.

The posters of the 1970s are devoted to the various problems of environmental change as a result of rapid industrialization: pollution of water bodies, deforestation, the rapid development of industry in order to fulfill plans. Officials and bureaucrats hold responsibility for it. The appeal “Take care of nature!” sounds distinct. At the same time, artists no longer just ridicule the actions of officials and plant directors, but also the behaviour of ordinary people.

The ecological poster of the last decade is already addressing directly to each person with an appeal to bear personal responsibility for environmental pollution.

The book part of the exhibition is divided into several semantic blocks. Firstly, there are environmental issues in the works of Western European and American researchers, such as Z. Brinkman, L. Brown, A. Gore and others. They reflect the attitude of the world scientific community to critical phenomena related to global environmental disasters, warming and reactions of the post-industrial society. Secondly, there are issues of possible changes in the field of ecology, calls to stop the irreversible processes that will lead the planet to imminent death.

One of the sections contains documents that teach the reader an ecological way of life and publications for children. These books demonstrate the cycle of things in the modern world - from the production process to recycling. They are designed to help the new generation to form a more responsible attitude not only to the environment but to the whole world.

The main target audience of the exhibition project is ordinary visitors, schoolchildren and students. But it will be interesting for environmental activists and specialists.

The exhibition is on show at the Atrium Gallery from April 29 to August 13, 2020.

The opening hours of the exhibition correspond to the library’s opening hours.
Admission is by library card or by the ticket of the library's social and cultural center.
