For Christmas and the New Year, the Christmas Star themed exhibition is on show in the Library (on the 2nd floor of the circular corridor) from 14 December.

The kindest, brightest and most long-awaited holidays – New Year and Christmas – are approaching. Every country, every nation celebrates these holidays in its own way, with its own traditions, legends and customs. For Belarusians, the end and the beginning of the year are not just dates. These two weeks filled with joy and fun, are called Kaliady. Earlier during this period Belarusians said goodbye to the burdens of the old year, brought three Kucia to the table, visited the church, congratulated neighbours personally and wished them all the best, told fortunes for the next year. All two weeks people tried to be cheerful, friendly, perky, and sometimes silly, just like the Kaliadas, little spirits, which visit people at this time of the year.

The book exhibition "Christmas Star" tells about these traditions. It consists of several sections. The first – "Christmas in the World" – tells us about the traditions of celebrating the most anticipated time in different countries.

In the section "Kaliady in Belarus", special attention is paid to the tradition of celebrating the New Year by our ancestors: publications from the academic book series "Belarusian Folk Art", works by Tatsiana Kukharonak, Alies Lozka, Aksana Katovich and others are presented. Kitchen amateurs will be interested in the recipes of traditional cuisine from the books of Belarusian chefs Alies Bely and Aliena Mikulchyk.

The classic Christmas tales of Charles Dickens, Hans Christian Andersen and Washington Irving will help while away the long winter evenings. For the little ones, the library staff have selected funny stories by Sven Nordqvist and Jujja Wieslander about the winter adventures of Findus the Cat and Mama Moo the cow. They are presented in the section "Warm Evenings".

We invite you to the exhibition "Christmas Star" to share the warm atmosphere of the holiday.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

We invite you to visit the exhibition until January 19, 2022.
The end date is subject to change.

The opening hours of the exhibition correspond to the library’s opening hours.
Admission is by the library card or by the Social and Cultural Centre ticket.

The books presented at the exhibition can be ordered through the electronic catalogue of the National Library of Belarus.
