The exhibition "Chernobyl. Endurance test", dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, is organized in the Library (3rd floor, circular corridor) from April 22 to May 31.

The Chernobyl disaster is the largest industrial catastrophe of the 20th century, national calamity that changed thousands of people’s destinies who live in different destinies. Once blossoming, developed areas became exclusion areas.

The exhibition "Chernobyl. Endurance test" presents documents (copies and authentic) from the fund of the National Archives of the Republic of Belarus that characterize activities of state institutions of Belarus aimed at overcoming the Chernobyl consequences. First of all these are materials on social protection of population from radioactive threat: evacuation of citizens from a 30-kilometer zone, housing construction for evacuees, provision of clean products, medical assistance rendering. Photo documents are provided by the Belarusian State Archive of cine, photo and audio records. Besides the archive documents and photo materials, the exposition includes scientific, popular scientific, industrial practical, educational and reference editions, fiction, exhibition catalogs and photo albums from funds of the National Library of Belarus, that reflect the Chernobyl disaster.

The section "Heroic deed. Liquidators" has materials about people’s heroism, who responsibly and professionally fulfilled their duty of the disaster’s aftermath minimization – tamed a ’rebellious atom’ at the station, involved in deactivation, evacuated people, maintained order in the Chernobyl zone. They deserve respect.

The Chernobyl disaster didn’t leave the global community indifferent. The priceless international assistance is revealed in a separate section. State, non-governmental, public organizations from many countries rendered financial, material, humanitarian assistance to Belarusians, it included products, medical equipment and medicaments, children and adults’ rehabilitation.

A separate section is dedicated to different aspects of the health condition of Belarus, that suffered from the catastrophe, medical and biological consequences, and development of the radioactive medicine.

Materials of the Russian State Archive of Contemporary History are of particular interest. The Belarusian community will be able to get acquainted with copies of records of Politbureau meetings and its reactions to the Chernobyl disaster, correspondence of M. Gorbachev and R. Reagan on this issue, texts of messages to international state leaders about the catastrophe and other materials.

The Chernobyl disaster became a real endurance test in almost all spheres for Belarus and Belarusians. Belarus has not just endured it, but also having received a priceless scientific and practical experience in catastrophe overcoming, created a system able to resist possible calamities, makes the exclusion area a blossoming place again 30 years later.
