From December 11, 2007 to December 31, 2007 in the Documents of International Organizations Reading Room (second floor, room 207g) is open a book exhibition “International Migration in the early 21st Century” dedicated to the International Migrant’s Day.
The International Migrant’s Day was proclaimed at the 55th session of the UN General Assembly in 2000 (resolution 55/93) and it has being celebrated annually on December 18.
On December 18, 1990 was adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (resolution 45/158).
International migration is peculiar to the modern world. According to statistics, every 35th person is a migrant who lives and works abroad.
The world economy is more and more dependant on migrants. They provide host countries with experience, knowledge, and human resources, and contribute to cultural and scientific development.
But at the same time migration causes numerous problems. The world community is concerned about this issue. Today many migrants are victims of exploitation, smuggling, and human traffic. Migrants suffer from discrimination, xenophobia, and racism. Therefore the world community pays a particular attention to the protection of migrants’ rights.
The book exhibition acquaints visitors with international legal documents on the protection of migrants’ rights and migration management; migrants; urgent issues, and their contribution to the life, culture and economy of the modern world community.
The exhibition includes the following sections:
-international migration law;
-migration policy and cooperation;
-international labour migration;
- globalization and migration urgent issues.
The exposition totals about 60 documents of international organizations (UN, IMO, OSCE, ILO, and European Union) in Russian, French, German, and English languages: books, periodicals, and the UN mimeographed materials.
We invite to the exhibition experts in international relations, lawyers, scientists, professors, students, and everyone who is interested in migration urgent issues.
