Amedeo Modigliani: the 135th birth anniversary
Other news

A book exhibition timed to the 135th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding Italian painter and sculptor, Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920), runs in the fine arts reading room (306), from July 12 to September 9.

The artist was born in Livorno, Italy, and lived and worked in Paris. He was influenced by the work of Pablo Picasso and was a friend of Haim Soutine. In Paris, Modigliani met his muse and love, Anna Akhmatova, and shortly before his death he found happiness with the young and romantic Jeanne Hebuterne. Although Modigliani lived only 35 years, he left a deep mark on world art.

The artist is considered to be the representative of expressionism, but his style is absolutely unique and inimitable. Being not only a talented painter but also a sculptor, the master skillfully combined these two arts.

The exhibition presents the reproductions of paintings by Amedeo Modigliani, in particular portraits, a priority genre in his work. Visitors will see the images of the beautiful Jeanne Hebuterne, contemporaries of the artist, his friends and colleagues. The landscapes, a rarity in Modigliani’s work, as well as the images of sculptures, where the influence of African art is noticeable, will attract attention. The true masterpieces are works in the nude genre.

Materials about the artist’s life and career are on display, in particular the monographs of Pierre Sishel, Corrado Augias, Vitaly Vilenkin, and the collection Amedeo Modigliani in the Memoirs of His Daughter and Contemporaries.

Today Amedeo Modigliani is still popular and highly appreciated. His paintings are kept in the best museums of the world, his style is copied, films about him are produced and books are written. The offered exhibition tells how Modigliani's art is promoted in modern culture; introduces fiction, where the main character is Modigliani, and articles about the opera Anna and Amedeo and the film Modigliani, directed by Mick Davis.

Over 50 publications are on display.

The opening hours of the exhibition correspond to the opening hours of the library.
Admission is by library card or by ticket of the library's social and cultural center. Information and tickets may be obtained at the registration desk.
