“A Strong UN for the Benefit of the Nations”, a thematic exhibition timed to the United Nations Day, runs in the Official documents department (room 207), from October 18 to December 3.

This Day was proclaimed on October 31, 1947 at the 2nd session of the UN General Assembly (resolution A / RES / 168 (II)) and since 1948 it has been celebrated annually. The United Nations Day is celebrated on October 24, 1945, when the UN founding document, the Charter, entered into force.

The United Nations is a community of independent countries that have united in the name of world peace and social progress. Currently, 193 states are members of the Organization.

The UN provides a platform where representatives of each country can express their views in the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council and other bodies and committees. By providing opportunities for negotiation and dialogue between Member States, the Organization serves as a tool to find common ground and work together to solve problems.

The Organization’s activities target a wide range of important issues facing humanity in the 21st century, such as peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, human rights, disarmament, terrorism, humanitarian and emergency situations, gender equality, governance, food production and much another.

The last years have become eventful for the UN: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development entered into force; the Paris Agreement on climate was signed, the ninth Secretary-General was elected, and efforts continue to resolve acute political crises. The authority of the Organization is growing, since in the present conditions the international community has one way to go, and that’ to unite efforts in the face of global challenges and threats.

The Republic of Belarus was at the origins of the United Nations, being among the 51 Founding Member States. Cooperation between the Republic of Belarus and the UN is one of the priorities of the country’s foreign policy. Participation in the UN and the system of UN bodies and special institutions allows the Republic of Belarus to more effectively solve the tasks of foreign policy, state development and modernization of national economics. The Belarusian delegation constantly participates in regular and special sessions of the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council and other leading UN bodies. The Republic of Belarus has always sought to take an active position within the UN on critical issues and problems on the international agenda and to make a real contribution to solving these problems.

The Organization works to save future generations from the scourge of war, maintain peace and international security and develop friendly relations among nations. The UN also implements international cooperation in resolving economic, social, cultural and humanitarian issues. The offered exhibition presents publications that cover the Organization’s activities.

More than 100 publications from the library collections are on display: books, periodicals, mimeo, brochures and booklets in the Russian and English languages.

The exposition includes the thematic sections as follow:

  • UN: basic information
  • Human rights
  • International law
  • Humanitarian issues
  • Peacekeeping and international security
  • Economic and social development
