From 20 January to 29 February, the exhibition “A song for the whole life”, devoted to the 120th anniversary of Gregory Shirma’s birth, runs in the Music and Audio Materials Reading Room (room 305).


Gregory R. Shirma is an outstanding figure in the culture of the Belarusian people in the 20th century. He is a laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Belarus(1966, 1974), People’s Artist of Belarus and the USSR, choral conductor, collector of folk songs, its promoter and researcher, organizer of the State Academic Choir of the Republic of Belarus, musical and social activist, journalist, honored artist of Belarus, musicologist, literary critic and publisher. His creative heritage is the national treasury, to which figures from different fields of culture still appeal.

The exhibition contains about 50 documents, including the first collection of folklore G. Shirma "Belaruskіya narodnyya pesnі" published in 1929, collections of "Belaruskіya narodnyya pesnі, zagadkі i prykazkі" (1947), "Belaruskіya pesnі" (1955) "Shkolny speunіk" (1957), "Dvestsi soten belaruskikh narodnykh pesen" (Two hundred Belarusian folk songs) (1958). Visitors will become acquainted with a 4-volume edition "Belaruskіya narodnyya pesnі" (1959-1976). This work was the result of almost 70 years of collecting and creativity G. Shirma.

He paid much attention to the creation and publication of highly artistic treatments of Belarusian folk songs. Among works a 2-volume edition "Belaruskіya narodnyya pesnі (for chorus)" (1971–1973), compiled by G. Shirma and that contains more than 200 adaptations of folk songs, are on display at the exhibition.One section of the exhibition consists of works from the repertoire of the State Academic Choir of the BSSR, including audio recordings.

Presented at the exhibition book "Pesnya – dusha lyudey" (A song is the soul of people) (2nd edition, 1993) introduces visitors to Shirma’s literary heritage. The collection includes the most significant written and oral performances of Gregory Shirma for the time of his social and creative activities.

Book "Antalogia Belaruskayy narognay pesni" (1968) and "Belaruskyy falklor v suchasnykh zapisyakh. Brestskaya voblast. Tradytsyynyya zhanry" (1973) which are on display will tell about Shirma’s editorial work.

The exhibition also includes books and articles about the master, written by A. Zhurov, I. Nisnevich, A. Lees, W. Litvinko, T. Varfolomeyeva, etc. Different writers, composers and other cultural figures share their memories about Shirma in the book "Pesnya na usye zhitsye: uspaminy pra R.R. Shirma" (1983).

On April 24, 2024, at the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Rumyantsev Readings-2024" in Moscow, Olga Polunchenko, chief bibliographer of the Department of reference and Information Services, presented a report "The role of Adam Shanyavsky in organizing the library fund of the Nesvizh County School (the last quarter of the XVIII century)."
