On October, 22nd, the opening ceremony of the republican art exhibition “Smart metal” took place in the Library. The project author and curator: Larissa Finkelstein, an art critic.
The event started with an unexpected “heavy metal” performance of the “Steel Razor” art group, and then guests of the exhibition could appreciate an emotional plastic dance of the duet “Plastic Energy”. By surprising and bewitching the audience actors, in the very beginning of the celebration, could create an atmosphere of inconsistent feelings and emotions that were so necessary to understand artists’ ideas and secrets that their masterpieces hid.
“Everything that Larissa does is always unusual and unpredictable”, – first deputy director Elena Dolgopolova said recollecting her cooperation with the art critic during the time when the National Library of Belarus was located in the old building. – “And today, after a long pause, we can observe something unusual. Moreover, for the first time in eight years we can hear hard rock in the library and in broad daylight! And the exhibition grasps breath, indeed”. Having reminded visitors that the exposition was located on two floors, Elena Dolgopolova wished further successes to the project author and the artists who presented their works at the exposition.
”This project has been ripening for many years, artists of the whole republic have been involved to present to the audience all kinds of art, – author of the exhibition, founder of the first Belarusian author’s noncommercial conceptual gallery ”BRAMA” Larissa Finkelstein said. – The project’s concept is based on a new look at metal from the point of view of different kinds of art: not only professional “metal-workers”, but also painters, sculptors, designers and textile artists take part in the exhibition”.
Having thanked by name everyone who had made efforts and assisted in realization of her long-term idea, Larissa Finkelstein asked to speak her old friend, people’s actor of Belarus, theatre and cinema director Boris Lutsenko. “I’m happy that this wonderful person has dragged me for such a fine exhibition, – he thanked the project author. – Suits of the XIV century, rust on the exhibits as a symbol of ruthless time – all this affects me so much! It makes me shiver! Metal in itself is terrible, it shoots, bombs, cuts... But we can see now that it can be kind. The artists show us that metal is not only destruction, metal is a life!”.
This idea was shared by other speakers as well: Leonid Diaghilev (the artist-adventurer, as Larissa Finkelstein noted) – member of the Belarusian Union of Artists and head of the faculty of design at the Institute of Modern Knowledge named after A.M. Shirokov, director and musician Andrey Plesanov, chairman of the Belarusian Union of Designers Dmitry Sursky, and young poetess Lyudmila Klochko. Instead of long emotional speeches, artist-conceptualist and bard Sergey Shilo amazed the audience with his author’s songs. One of his musical compositions – “And I have verses from you...” – the author addressed to Larissa Finkelstein.
The exhibition “Smart metal” is available to all visitors of the National Library of Belarus and runs in the galleries “Rakurs” (2nd floor) and “Labyrinth” (3rd floor) until November, 24th, 2014.
