Street basketball is a sports game based on the rules of classic basketball, which is popular all over the world. In the US, basketball has become a cult sport; it has been played since 1891, when James Naismith, a Canadian physical educator at Springfield College, invented this game for his students. The first demonstration basketball competitions were held during the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis. A big basketball tournament took place during the 1936 Summer Olympic Games, which was attended by the creator of the game, James Naismith.

In mid-twentieth century, basketball became a national sport in the United States. The American National Basketball Association (National Basketball Association, NBA) admitted only white players. African-Americans could not be enrolled in the NBA that led to the creation of Streetball.

Street basketball was born n poor African-American neighborhoods in the United States, in the 1950s. The main advantages of street basketball are the versatility and simplicity: the ball is thrown into one basket on a half court; the game is played with three players in each team; no referees are employed; violations and warnings are tracked by the teams themselves, and the place to play can be found almost anywhere.

Gradually, Streetball has grown from ordinary after work entertainment into an independent and popular sport. In 1956, basketball fan Holcombe Rucker held the first street basketball tournament in Harlem (New York). Soon these competitions became popular. America recognized and loved street basketball. Decades later, Rucker Park, the place chosen by Holcomb Rucker for competition, became the symbol of New York and bears his name.

Streetball hit Europe at the end of the twentieth century, when in 1991 a street basketball tournament was held in France. The game was named "3x3 Basketball" and became popular around the world. Today, basketball associations are involved in the development of street basketball; street football federations have been established in some countries (for example, the Russian Street Basketball Association).

In 2007, the International Basketball Federation (Federation Internationale de Basketball, FIBA), together with the organizing committee of the Youth Olympic Games, decided to include street basketball in the Summer Games program. The new sport made its debut at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in August 2010. In 2011, the Youth World Championship was held in Italy. In 2014, the Russian Street Basketball Association organized the World Streetball Championship in Moscow. By the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), 3x3 Basketball was included in the program of the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
