Vitebsk

The city is the center of Vitebsk Region and Vitebsk District, the Republic of Belarus.

It was founded in 974, the Chronicles names are Vidbesk, Videbsk, Vitbesk, Vitepesk.

Since 1101: the center of Vitebsk Principality.
Since 1320: in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. From the 14th century: the center of Vitebsk County.
Since 1506: the center of Vitebsk Province. In 1597, the city received the Magdeburg Law.
Since 1772: in the Russian Empire. In 1772–1777: the center of Vitebsk Governorate. It was a county town in Pskov and Polotsk Governorates (1776) and the central city of Belarusian (1796) and Vitebsk Governorates (1802).
Since 1919: in the RSFSR.
In 1924, the city was returned to the Byelorussian SSR and became the center of Vitebsk Region and Vitebsk District.
Since 1938: the center of Vitebsk Oblast, a city of regional subordination.

The city is located on the river Western Dvina.
