Polotsk

Polotsk is the center of Polotsk district, Vitebsk region, Republic of Belarus.

It was mentioned for the first time in the "Tale of Bygone Years" under 862. Chronicle names: Polotesk.

In the 10th – 13th centuries it became the center of the Polotsk principality.
Since the end of 13th – early 14th century it was the part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Magdeburg law was adopted in 1498. In the 14th – 16th centuries it was the largest city in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Since 1504 it has become the center of the Polotsk province.
In 1772 the right-bank part of the city and the left-bank in 1793 entered to the Russian Empire. In 1802 it became the center of the Vitebsk province.
From 1919 it was in the RSFSR, from 1924 in the BSSR as the center of the Polotsk district.

The city is located on the Western Dvina and Polota rivers.
