The exhibition "There is a bagpiper among us…" has been on display in the library since January 31. The exhibition is dedicated to the 215th anniversary of the birth of Vincent Dunin-Marcinkevich, a great Belarusian dramatist, poet, publicist, educator, translator, literary and public figure (1808–1884).
The name of a distinguished native of Belarus is well-known not only in his own country but also far beyond its borders. He was the first to clearly understand that Belarusian literature can only develop on the foundation of the spiritual life of his native people.
About 70 documents from V. Dunin-Marcinkevich's extensive legacy are on display. Collections of works, journals, correspondence, and biographical and literary portraits are displayed. Visitors can view copies of his writings published between 1855 and 1865 that are part of the National Library of Belarus's holdings.
Through publications that discuss the author's creative legacy in national and European contexts, the first portion of the exhibition emphasises the key stages of the work of the classic of Belarusian literature. The writings of renowned literary critics, including M. Goretsky, I. Naumenko, K. Tsvirko, G. Kiseliov, A. Maldis, O. Loiko, V. Ragoish, and others, are presented here.
The major exhibits are lifetime editions and original copies of the renowned Belarusian author's Polish-language works that were released in Vilnius and Minsk in 1857 and 1861, respectively.
The poem "Gapon" (Minsk, 1855), the first piece of writing by V. Dunin-Marcinkevich written fully in Belarusian, is on display as a true rarity.
One of the gems in the exhibit is an original copy of the 1861 poem "Liutsynka, abo Shvedy na Litve", which poeticizes the bravery and valour of the progenitors of contemporary Belarusians. The last of his works to be published during his lifetime is this one.
Also among the interesting exhibits is the translation of A. Mickiewicz's poem "Pan Tadevush", made by V. Dunin–Marcinkiewicz. Both the original 1908 copy and the 1859 reprint edition are on display.
You can examine the author's work more closely and gain a comprehensive understanding of how he contributed to the growth of Belarusian theatre and literature through the exhibition.
