The Ringed Gallery (second floor) will play host to the joyous exhibition "The Christmas Star", which is dedicated to Christmas and New Year, from 7 December, 2022 to 11 January, 2023.
Christmas and New Year's are unique occasions marked by a belief in magic, filled with miracles, happiness, wintertime fun, and gifts. The conclusion of the year and the beginning of the next are not merely dates for Belarusians. Christmas is a time of joy and fun that lasts for two weeks. Previously, during this period, Belarusians were able to bid farewell to the burden of the previous year, prepare three Kutia dishes, make sure to visit an Orthodox or Catholic church, visit their neighbours, wish them well, and predict the future. One tries to be upbeat, courteous, lively, and occasionally even foolish during these two weeks, just like the carols themselves, which are like little spirits that come to individuals during this time.
The book exhibition "Christmas Star" consists of several sections and tells about the history of folk holidays, New Year and Christmas traditions, signs and beliefs associated with them. The exhibition begins with the part titled "Christmas in Belarus", which focuses especially on the custom of our forefathers celebrating the New Year.
In the section "Christmas in the world", visitors will learn about the celebration of New Year and Christmas in Russia, Canada, Germany, France and other countries.
The central place is given to the "Warm evenings" section, which explains how to decorate an apartment, make original gifts for relatives and friends, make masks, souvenirs and Christmas decorations. Tips from professional decorators and screenwriters will help you set the table in style and organize an unforgettable holiday full of fun, surprises and contests.
Books from “The Christmas Readings” section, which features fairy-tale novels and short stories by Hans Christian Andersen, Charles Dickens, Haruki Murakami, Nikolai Gogol, and Nikolai Nekrasov, will help you spend family winter evenings. In the collection “Belarusian Winter” young visitors will get acquainted with the best poems, fairy tales, stories of famous Belarusian writers about winter and New Year's holiday. The section also presents the latest editions of contemporary Belarusian authors, which were published this year by the publishing house "Belarus".
Rarities of the exhibition include “The Winter’s Tale” by William Shakespeare (Moscow, 1866) and “Holiday Stories” by Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko (St. Petersburg, 1904).
