On November 23, the Atrium Gallery opened the Sergey Alimov's Graphic Art Exhibition “Dead Souls: Illustrations to a Poem by Nikolai Gogol” as part of the Days of Russian Culture in the Republic of Belarus.
Sergey Alimov (1938–2019), People's Artist of the Russian Federation, full member of the Russian Academy of Arts, Professor at the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography, member of the Russian Academy of Cinematographic Arts. Production designer, animator, author of illustrations for more than 100 books, including “The Golovlyov Family” by Mikhail Yevgrafovich Saltykov-Shchedrin, “Baron Munchausen's Narrative of his Marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia” by Rudolf Erich Raspe and, of course, "Dead Souls" by Nikolai Gogol.
The exhibition project will present to the audience a series of 40 graphic works by Sergey Alimov, made in the screen printing technique. The exhibition of graphics will be complemented by a book exhibition from the collections of the National Library of Belarus. The first editions of the poem “Chichikov’s Adventures, or Dead Souls” (1842, 1846), the first illustrated editions of the work are presented here. One of the most striking copies is a folio from 1901 published by A.F. Marx in St. Petersburg with 10 pieces of helioengravings, 355 illustrations, initials and vignettes.
As part of the event, the National Library of Belarus will receive publications from the Russian Cultural Foundation.
National Library of Belarus, the Russian Cultural Foundation and the Russian House in Minsk, all are responsible of organizing the event.
The exhibition will be on display until January 31, 2023.
The end date of the exhibition can be changed.
Entrance to the exhibition at the grand opening is free, the rest of the time the entrance is available by the library ticket or ticket of the library's social and cultural center.
