Izabella Ivanovna Martinovich occupies a special place among the pleiades of well-known Belarusian legal scholars. This is the first woman in Belarus to be awarded the academic degree of Doctor of Law, the academic title of professor.

Izabella Ivanovna was born on October 27, 1927 in Bogushevsk, Vitebsk region, in the family of a military man. In 1945, after she had finished school with a gold medal, the girl entered the Minsk Law Institute without entrance exams, and when she graduated from it in 1949 with honors, she entered graduate study. In 1954, she successfully defended her candidate’s thesis "The principle of disclosure in the Soviet criminal proceedings", and in 1969 – her PhD thesis "Development of the court and criminal procedure forms of judicial activity in the Belorussian SSR". When research paper was defended, numerous publications of the professor had appeared, which made on the basis of the analysis of legislation, and the practice of its application. These publications have not lost their relevance at the present time.

She has justified the idea of creating a juvenile justice system in Belarus and proposed a model for its organization. She also developed proposals for modernizing the organizational forms of advocacy, unifying and harmonizing the legislation on the judicial system of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation. She has been a member of the Permanent Court of the International Court of Arbitration in The Hague for ten years. She participated in the preparation of the Belarus’ 1994 draft Constitution and the Belarus’ Judicial and Legal Reform Concept as an expert developer.

Izabella Ivanovna devoted a lot of time and effort to the training of lawyers at the Belarusian State University Law Faculty: in the lecture hall, during the management of research paper, and in the Theses defense council. The professor promoted a love of scientific activity to many for her students while working on their theses, which later resulted in their defense of dissertation research. Izabella Ivanovna published about 180 scientific papers, including nine monographs, was a co-author of textbooks and scientific and practical comments. She has trained four candidates and one PhD in law. For her achievements in scientific and pedagogical activity, she was awarded the titles of Belarus’ Honored Lawyer, BSSR’ higher school Honored Worker and Belarusian State University’ Honored Worker. Professor I.I. Martinovich was awarded a Merit Certificate of the BSSR Supreme council, she is a laureate of the V.I. Pichet’s prize and the highest legal award "Themis".

February 16, 2021 Izabella Ivanovna passed away. Science has lost a brilliant scientist who had a fine legal intuition and the broadest legal erudition.
